PURPOSE
Stop treating jumping a tower like running a shift. If this is the work, it is planned as this work.
SCOPE
Tower-crane erection, climbing (increasing height), repositioning and dismantling. Not climbing the ladder to the cab to operate. Not a how-to for jumping a crane.
This document is the method — the steps. Hazards, consequence and residual risk for the same work are in the JHA library. A procedure is not a hazard analysis. A hazard analysis is not a procedure.
PROCEDURE
- 01
CONFIRM THE WORK
The work is erection, climbing or dismantling — said in writing. A tower operator shift is not this work.
- 02
SUPERVISOR AND NOP
Qualified supervisor named. Notice of Project to WorkSafeBC on the timeline 14.73.3 names. If either is missing, the work does not start.
- 03
MANUAL AND CONFIGURATION
This serial, this tower system, this climbing frame, this tie-in. The manufacturer’s sequence is the sequence.
- 04
ZONE AND WEATHER
Exclusion under the work. Wind and weather as the manufacturer and the plan. People off the ground under the frame.
- 05
ISOLATE WHEN REQUIRED
Lockout / isolation when anyone is in the machine for this work. GOSPEL-SWP-026.
- 06
STOP
Any step that is not in the manual, any missing pin, any unplanned person in the zone — stop. Rewrite. Do not improvise a jump.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This program
The published method for the work. Stop-work is named in it. It does not own the site.
Supervisor
Confirms the plan, the crew, the zone and the stop criteria. Owns whether the hook moves.
Crane operator
Runs only the machine they are competent on, to the chart, after inspection. Stops on an unclear signal or a broken plan.
Rigger
Selects, inspects and applies the hitch. Does not guess weight, centre of gravity or angle.
Signalperson
One set of hands on the crane. Holds the zone. STOP means stop.
Worker
Works to this program and to site rules — whichever is stricter. Uses the three rights. Reports damaged gear.
REQUIRED COMPETENCY
- Work under a qualified supervisor as 14.73.2 and 14.73.3 require. A tower ticket alone does not assign an operator to jump a crane.
EQUIPMENT

PPE
- Hard hat
- CSA-grade footwear
- High-visibility clothing
- Eye protection
- Task-rated gloves
- Hearing protection where required
- Fall protection where the work exposes a fall
PROHIBITED PRACTICES
- An operator jumping a crane as a favour
- Skipping the NOP because the pour is tomorrow
- Using a different manufacturer’s climbing notes
EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Stop the lift. Make people safe. Land or hold the load if it can be done without a second incident. First aid. Notify the site and the employer. Hold the scene.
